Who We Are.....

 

 

Banna Chluain Meala Youth Band, now enjoying a history spanning 50 years, was founded back in 1971. An inspiring vision to nurture musical talent among the youth of Clonmel and its hinterland was driven by a small team with huge dedication and passion.

Originally a Brass band of 40 members, the instruments had to be borrowed, the practise room was the gym hall of the local garda station. As the band grew, it also evolved into a Brass and Reed band.”

Today, due to the commitment, energy and extensive voluntary effortsof this organisation, Banna Chluain Meala has a complement ranging from 100 -130 members at any given time which include the youth band, the colour-guard and junior members. Hence this Clonmel band outgrew the Garda gym to open its very own headquarters, BannaChluain Meala. Clonmel’s own hugely popular band leader Mick Delahunty performed the opening ceremony for the brand-new hall.

While having an inspiring start and an amazing new space to practise,the motivation to broaden the minds and horizons of this youth band strived under the careful and dedicated approach by each committee member and greatly supportive parents.

Having the fantastic opportunity to travel widely both nationally and internationally while representing County and Country, Banna ChluainMeala have successfully achieved many awards in both Concert, Marching and Field Show classes. These awards and accomplishments are a legacy of ‘hard work’ and ‘lots of fun’.

Banna Chluain Meala’s most recent achievement was being joined by many of the founding members to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the band. The occasion saw members from 1971 through to today performing together to celebrate and reminisce. This nostalgic event saw 3 generations of families playing music together. Here’s to another 50 years and another 5000 members along the way.

 

Banna Chluain Meala strive to uphold and build on the traditions of the band through pursuit of excellence in practice and performance.
